Why didn't Valli want to befriend the elderly woman?

Valli didn't want to befriend the elderly woman because she was chewing betel nut, its juice was coming out on her lips and she had very ugly earrings. She asked if it is proper for such a young person to travel alone. She enquired if Valli knew exactly where she was going in town. Hence, the elderly woman's behaviour irritated Valli and she did not want to befriend her.
